Laura Mueller Becomes Formula 1’s First Female Race Engineer at Haas

Antonina Jaromin

Laura Mueller makes history by becoming Formula 1’s first female race engineer in 75 years. Mueller was promoted to this position in Haas and will be the race engineer of the new team driver, Esteban Ocon.

She joined Haas in 2022 and helped with the simulator side of things but soon became involved in engineering roles. She is known for her determination, calmness, and clarity, which are good attributes of a race engineer. Every driver has a race engineer, whose key role is to make the driver aware of the race strategy and any decisions made by the team. Clear communication is vital, as the driver can also give feedback to the race engineer, which can help improve the car’s performance.

There have been and are some iconic driver-engineer duos, such as Lewis Hamilton and Peter Bonnington, who have won six world titles together; Max Verstappen and Gianpiero Lambiase, who have worked together since 2016; and Riccardo Adami, who has worked with four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz Jr., and currently with Lewis Hamilton.

As she steps into this role alongside Esteban Ocon, all eyes will be on their dynamic as they work together to optimize performance and strategy throughout the season. Laura Mueller’s position marks a significant milestone in motorsport history, inspiring a new generation of female engineers to pursue careers in Formula 1.
